De-Skunking the Dog

One of my worst fears came true the other night, Margot got skunked! I had been dreading this since last summer when a skunk family took up residence under our shed. Luckily nothing ever happened and when the bunny family took up residence under said shed this year I figured we were safe from skunks. Well I was wrong! We were able to grab her right away and immediately got her into the bathtub. I read about this shampoo a while back and had purchased a bottle just in case. Was I ever glad I did! This stuff is a miracle worker. We only had to wash her once and she smelled good as new and as if nothing ever happened. I wanted to pass this info along to all of you that have dogs or other pets - this shampoo really is great! I'm going to be sure to keep a supply on hand at all times!

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhh, poor thing! Once my snowy white angel cat came home
smelling of that horror and with nothing else at hand I tried V8...
uh...no success...and my poor Sammy
was quite a funky orange color too boot!

Oh.. I am getting some! I feel your pain.. as I went down this road a couple of years ago with Aly. I let her out late one night, and there was a skunk just off the edge of the deck. HORRIBLE!

Hi Karla,

Sorry to hear about the stinky dog. How awful for all of you. Thank goodness you were prepared. I hope the family of skunks relocates for you!!

Our late Jack Russell ran like a maniac (which is why he is the "late" dog) and one time at the lake got off his chain and nailed a skunk, which ran under a house just sold, with the new occupants moving in the next day! Needless to say, I'm not sure they ever were all that fond of my parents or Jack! You have my empathy!

Sophie has never been skunked, but yesterday she came in with my husband after having rolled in something the likes of which I've never smelled in my life. It would have made a skunk smell good. And it was all black and chunky. My hubby says he doesn't know what she got in. THAT MAN! I herded her straight to the bathtub and bathed her with the oatmeal and lavender shampoo and the stink went away, along with the black chunky stuff. I'm glad skunks aren't prevalent around here. Sophie would have probably found a dead one by now.

Oh that is NOT fun at all! We live in the country so that happens more than I would like to admit.

This has happened way too many times at my farm! THanks for the great tip on the shampoo. It seems like whatever we used just didn't work very well!

Hello! I am sorry about your dog. How smart of you to think ahead to buy just the right shampoo. :-)

I was reading some of your past posts and I came to the one of your surprise birthday party in 2007. Could you find out where your sister purchased the darling autograph plate? We are having a surprise (I hope) 40th birthday for my daughter in Sept. That plate is something I think would be fun for to have after the celebration is over.

Thank-you very much! Debbi faustx2@yahoo.com

But I'm taking down the name of that miracle shampoo just in case. LOL

Poor Margot, and poor you! I had heard that tomato juice works too, and we usually have some in the pantry. We live in the country and I recently smelled a skunk in the area for the very first time in years. Luckily, no problems with those critters for me, YET!

Poor little doggie. Good thing you were prepared with that bottle of miracle shampoo on hand! I think we were always told to use ketchup (Or something else with tomato in it) for skunking? This is a waaay better alternative. Thanks for sharing!

Poor Margot. Thanks for the info. I think I will get a bottle to have on hand as well. Miss Alice spends a lot of time outdoors.
